Garden Rules
(last updated 3/25/25)

The rules detailed below supplement the membership requirements and garden policies set out in the Garden Member Agreement. Rules will be added or updated as needed by the Board. â€‹

Prohibited Plants

The following plants are considered highly invasive or unsafe and are not permitted in plots or common areas:

  • raspberry*, black raspberry, blackberry, gooseberry

  • all mints (peppermint, spearmint, etc)

  • stinging nettle

  • fennel

  • morning glory

  • society garlic

  • ivy

  • horsetail grass

  • plants with spines or thorns (e.g., cacti)

  • poisonous plants (oleander, foxglove, nightshade, etc.)

  • intoxicating or psychoactive plants (tobacco, cannabis, etc.)

*with the exception of the established raspberry patch in the common area

Restricted Plants

Certain plants are permitted only if they are contained or maintained below a certain size.

  • Woody shrubs (lavender, rosemary, sage, roses, etc.) or plants that can grow into trees, are permitted only if they are maintained no larger than 2’ x 2’ x 2’ (when left unmaintained, woody shrubs can take over a plot and become difficult to remove).

  • Plants that spread easily (e.g., nasturtium, arugula) must be contained.

Soil and Organic Gardening

  • Soil is to be revitalized. Best practice is to sift soil and remove any debris before adding potting soil and compost.

  • No dumping of used soil in any areas of the garden.

  • Compost is a shared resource and should be used sparingly. Maximum of 2-inches of compost across plot surface per delivery per Garden Member. (Only a few inches of compost is necessary to add to the top of plots to be worked in. Otherwise, compost can “burn” plants as it’s high in nitrogen and contributes to uneven growth, bolting, and disease.)

  • No chemical or toxic pesticides or odorous manure amendments may be used.

Plant Height and Plot Features

  • Plants in plots must not exceed 5' in height from ground level or obstruct or invade neighboring plots, paths, or common areas.

  • Trellis supports introduced into the plots must adhere to the following: positioned to cast least shade on neighboring plots, especially, south/north. Trellis cannot obstruct view for neighboring plot. Trellis measurement limitations: 3' height x 3' width x 2” depth. Trellis supports must provide adequate support for the intended plants: i.e. bases submerged and/or spaced for stability.

  • A structure installed in a plot that is deemed unsafe and/or to unduly cast shade/restrict growth of neighboring plots or common areas or invite discord will be subject to removal.

Other

  • Beehives are not permitted in plots or common areas.

  • All planting and/or materials placed in common areas are subject to prior approval by the Board. Plants and materials installed or placed without prior approval are subject to removal, per discretion of the Board. Submit common area proposals for review to acgcoordinator@gmail.com.

  • Garden Members agree not to sell or waste produce from the garden.
